New York City’s cultural calendar has been reinvigorated with the announcement of Jazz in July 2024 at the 92nd Street Y, marking its 39th season and the debut under the artistic directorship of Aaron Diehl. Scheduled from July 17 to 27, this year’s lineup promises an exciting blend of tradition and innovation, showcasing both established luminaries and emerging talents in the world of jazz.
Founded by jazz piano legend Dick Hyman in 1985, Jazz in July has become a cornerstone of summer entertainment in New York City, known for its rich history of presenting exceptional performances across various styles within the jazz genre. Under the stewardship of Aaron Diehl, celebrated for his virtuosity and commitment to pushing artistic boundaries, this season aims to expand upon the festival’s illustrious legacy.
Diehl’s vision for Jazz in July 2024 is ambitious yet deeply rooted in honoring the festival’s heritage. His inaugural season promises to explore new dimensions of jazz, embracing a diverse repertoire that includes boundary-blurring explorations, global influences, and fresh interpretations of the American Songbook. The lineup features a stellar roster of artists who embody the spirit of innovation and collaboration that defines contemporary jazz.
The series kicks off on July 17th at the historic Kaufmann Concert Hall with “Kenny, Benny and Bop!”, a tribute to hard bop led by NEA Jazz Master Kenny Barron and Benny Green, alongside Helen Sung, Joe Block, and Aaron Diehl. This quintessential piano extravaganza sets the tone for a season characterized by virtuosity and creative synergy.
The following days bring an array of performances that highlight the breadth and depth of jazz talent. Isaiah J. Thompson Quartet takes the stage on July 18th at Buttenwieser Hall, showcasing Thompson’s exceptional prowess as a pianist whose music bridges jazz, gospel, and soul. Marilyn Maye, Catherine Russell, and Ekep Nkwelle unite on July 20th for an unforgettable evening celebrating three generations of jazz vocal excellence, accompanied by the Aaron Diehl Trio.
Etienne Charles & Creole Soul bring their dynamic fusion of calypso, post-bop, and reggae to Kaufmann Concert Hall on July 24th, while Adam Birnbaum, Jeb Patton, and Aaron Diehl explore the intersection of jazz and classical influences in “Preludes” on July 25th at Buttenwieser Hall. The festival culminates on July 27th with Tyshawn Sorey & Warren Wolf offering their innovative interpretations of the American Songbook, showcasing Sorey’s visionary compositions and the virtuosity of Warren Wolf on vibes.
Reflecting on his directorial debut, Aaron Diehl expressed his excitement about curating a season that fosters artistic honesty and vulnerability. He aims to create a communal space where musicians and audiences alike can engage deeply with the music, transcending genres and traditions.
