The Montclair Jazz Festival, the largest free jazz festival in the greater NYC region, is back for its 15th year, promising a vibrant celebration of music and community. Hosted by Jazz House Kids, the Downtown Jamboree will transform Montclair’s Bloomfield Avenue into a jazz-filled paradise on September 14, from 12 p.m. to 10 p.m. The event, renowned for attracting thousands of music fans annually, offers an unforgettable experience with multiple stages of live performances, over 170 food and artisan vendors, and a lively atmosphere that celebrates jazz in all its forms.
Performance Lineup
This year’s festival boasts an exceptional lineup featuring some of the biggest names in jazz. Grammy-winning saxophonist Kenny Garrett will bring his virtuosity to the stage, while powerhouse vocalist Lisa Fischer, accompanied by her band Grand Baton, will showcase her dynamic talent. Audiences can look forward to thrilling performances by dynamic drummer Jerome Jennings & ill Philosophy, and the innovative Edmar Castañeda Quartet.
Jazz enthusiasts will be treated to the veteran trombonist and seashellist Steve Turre Sextet, rising star vocalist Brianna Thomas, and the Montclair State University Jazz Ensemble, directed by Oscar Perez. A highlight of the festival will be nine-time Grammy-winning bassist and festival music director Christian McBride, who will perform with his acclaimed quintet, Inside Straight. Additionally, the Jazz House Collective will pay tribute to jazz legend Sarah Vaughan, with special guest appearances by Jazz House Kids founder Melissa Walker.
“This year’s Montclair Jazz Festival will be another joyous celebration of America’s greatest art form, featuring some of the world’s finest musicians and fans, many of whom have supported Jazz House Kids and this festival since its inception 15 years ago,” says Christian McBride. “The ones that aren’t are simply those we haven’t met yet. Everyone who comes to our festival leaves embraced by our shared community, and their love for jazz is deepened.”
New Additions and Special Events
This year introduces the 15th Anniversary Celebration Block Party, which will commence after eight hours of live music. DJ Brother Mister and special guest DJ Prince Hakim will take over the Downtown Jamboree stage for a vibrant funk and soul dance party, adding an extra layer of excitement to the festival.
Moreover, the festival will debut the Jazz House Legacy Band, set to perform aboard the Montclair Jazz Festival sponsor Jazz Cruise’s Celebrity Summit, sailing in January 2025. This new addition promises to extend the festival’s celebration of jazz beyond the event itself.
