In the world of British big band jazz, Pete Cater occupies a specific and honored position: he is the drummer who made the Buddy Rich tradition his own in the UK, leading the Pete Cater Big Band through decades of performances that brought the highest standard of large ensemble swing to British audiences with the same energy and precision that Rich himself demanded from every musician who sat in his band. Rhythm Magazine, one of the most respected drumming publications in the world, has voted Cater one of the top five jazz drummers globally, a recognition that places him in company that needs no qualification. He has spent 50 years not simply performing but leading, not simply playing the repertoire but building an ensemble capable of executing it at the highest level, and the 50th anniversary celebration at PizzaExpress Live on November 1 is the milestone occasion that number demands.

What makes the November 1 show particularly significant is the note that accompanies the booking: Cater has described it as his final London performance for the foreseeable future, with his time, energy, and resources needed elsewhere as he focuses on the two upcoming album releases and the broader 50th anniversary project. For audiences in London who have followed his career or who have never had the opportunity to see the Pete Cater Big Band live, November 1 at PizzaExpress Soho is the moment that will not present itself again on the current horizon. The 1:00 PM Sunday afternoon timing makes it accessible. The significance makes it essential.

The Pete Cater Big Band built much of its reputation on Buddy Rich tributes, and Rich’s influence on Cater’s drumming and on the ensemble’s approach to swing and big band precision remains central to what the band does. But the November 1 show expands the frame considerably, widening the tribute from a single figure into a full survey of jazz drumming’s most significant voices. The program pays homage to Gene Krupa, the showman who made the drum kit a featured solo instrument in the big band era and whose performances with Benny Goodman made jazz drumming something that popular audiences followed with the same devotion they gave to front-line soloists. It honors Tony Williams, the prodigy who transformed jazz drumming’s relationship to time and energy as a teenager in Miles Davis’s Second Great Quintet and who continued to push the instrument throughout his career. And it celebrates Art Blakey, Joe Morello, and Philly Joe Jones, each of whom developed a drumming identity so complete and so specific that their names remain touchstones for anyone who has studied what the instrument can do in a jazz context.

Presenting all of these figures through the big band format is a compositional and arranging challenge of the highest order, because each drummer’s musical identity is inseparable from the specific ensembles they played with and the specific musical contexts those ensembles created. Making a big band arrangement that captures what Tony Williams sounded like in a Miles Davis quintet, or what Philly Joe Jones sounded like in a John Coltrane band, requires the kind of orchestration intelligence that the Pete Cater Big Band has developed across 50 years of exactly this kind of work. The November 1 show closes with the grand finale: Florian Ross’s re-imagining of West Side Story for full big band, a piece large enough in scope and ambition to close an anniversary celebration.

Fifty years of leading a big band is an extraordinary achievement at any level of the music, and Pete Cater has spent those five decades doing it at the highest level the British jazz scene offers. The November 1 show at PizzaExpress Live in Soho is a closing chapter event, not a valediction, but a moment of genuine significance in the life of an ensemble and a musician who have given the UK big band tradition something to be proud of across half a century. The two Abbey Road albums will document that achievement in the most permanent form available to live music. And the show itself, at 1:00 PM on a Sunday in Soho, is the kind of afternoon that serious big band listeners in London should not let pass.

The Embassy Cup is one of the more quietly remarkable annual events in Japanese sports and cultural life: an international cricket tournament organized by the Japan Cricket Association at the Sano International Cricket Ground in Tochigi Prefecture, bringing together teams representing the embassies of cricket-playing nations in Japan to compete in a format that is as much cultural festival as sporting competition. Now in its 9th edition, the Embassy Cup has built a genuine community around an unlikely premise: that cricket and international diplomacy and communal festivity belong together in a field in Sano, and that the Japanese public, given the right invitation, will show up for all of it. The Japan Cricket Association’s purpose for the event is explicitly one of sports diplomacy, using cricket as a vehicle for promoting diversity, international friendship, and the kind of cross-cultural encounter that happens naturally when eight different embassies are competing on the same ground and the food trucks are serving dishes from every nation represented on the field.

The 2026 edition has made one significant structural adjustment from previous years: the competitive matches have been concentrated into a single day, Saturday, October 24, running from 9:30 AM to 4:15 PM. The change was made to accommodate scheduling adjustments following the recent Asian Games. Eight teams divided into two divisions will compete simultaneously across two grounds in the T10 format, where each team bats for a maximum of 10 overs, producing a fast-paced, high-energy version of cricket that is specifically designed to be accessible and entertaining for audiences who may be encountering the sport for the first time. The tournament closes on Sunday with the local Tanuma Furusato Festival taking over the venue and offering a public demonstration match between the Japan Men’s National Cricket Team and the Sano Bulls Cricket Club, with live comedic commentary from the cricket-knowledgeable duo Tamashizu.

The addition of a live jazz performance to the Embassy Cup program is exactly the kind of programming decision that reflects the event’s broader cultural ambitions. From 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM on Saturday, as the T10 matches reach their conclusion and the afternoon light falls across the Sano International Cricket Ground, a band led by Taro Koyama will perform live in the open air. Koyama is widely recognized as one of Japan’s leading jazz drummers, a musician who has built his reputation through performance and recording at the highest levels of the Japanese and international jazz scenes. A live jazz set led by a musician of his stature, performed outdoors at a cricket tournament in Tochigi Prefecture for a crowd that includes diplomats, cricket fans, local families, and food truck customers, is not a niche event. It is jazz doing exactly what jazz has always done best: showing up wherever people are gathered and making the gathering better.

Japan has one of the deepest and most devoted jazz audiences in the world, a fact well known to musicians who have toured there and experienced the intensity of attention that Japanese jazz audiences bring to live performance. The Blue Note Tokyo has been one of the most important jazz venues in the world since it opened in 1988. The jazz label industry in Japan has produced some of the most beautifully documented live recordings in the music’s history. And the jazz drummer leading this particular performance at this particular outdoor event has earned his place in that tradition. The Embassy Cup jazz set on Saturday afternoon is a small thing in the context of a full day of cricket and international diplomacy, but it is also a genuine live jazz performance in a country where live jazz is taken seriously, and The Improv Café celebrates it on exactly those terms.

The Embassy Cup’s decision to close a cricket tournament with a live jazz performance led by one of Japan’s leading jazz drummers is a small story in the context of everything happening in the global jazz world this October. But it is the right kind of small story: jazz appearing in an unexpected place, in front of an audience that may not have come specifically for the music, doing what it has always done when given an outdoor stage and a gathered crowd. Japan’s relationship with jazz is one of the most devoted and most serious in the world, and Taro Koyama performing at the Sano International Cricket Ground on a Saturday afternoon in Tochigi is a direct expression of that relationship. Live jazz, in the open air, free to anyone who shows up. That is what this music has always been when it is at its most democratic and its most itself.

The Newport Jazz Festival is the oldest and most storied jazz festival in the United States. Founded in 1954 by George Wein and Elaine Lorillard in Newport, Rhode Island, it has been the site of some of the most important recorded performances in jazz history. Miles Davis’s “Miles Davis at Newport 1955” captured the performance that relaunched his career after a period of struggle. Duke Ellington’s 1956 Newport performance, captured on the album “Ellington at Newport,” is widely considered one of the greatest live jazz recordings ever made, the night Paul Gonsalves played 27 consecutive choruses on “Diminuendo and Crescendo in Blue” and the crowd went so wild that the State Police had to be called. Billie Holiday, Thelonious Monk, John Coltrane, Charles Mingus, Dizzy Gillespie, Mahalia Jackson, Chuck Berry, and virtually every major figure in American popular music has performed at Newport since 1954. The festival does not simply have a history. It is the history.

The Newport Festivals Foundation, which administers the auction, is the nonprofit organization behind both the Newport Jazz Festival and the Newport Folk Festival. Its year-round work extends well beyond the summer festivals into music education programs that bring jazz to students who might not otherwise encounter it and into artist relief initiatives that provide direct support to musicians facing financial hardship, medical crises, or other severe personal difficulties. The auction is the Foundation’s primary annual fundraising mechanism beyond ticket sales, and the items it auctions are genuine one-of-a-kind pieces of festival history.

The artist campus signs deserve their own explanation because they depend on a person most people have never heard of who has been essential to what Newport looks and feels like for over three decades. Nan Parati has been hand-lettering the signs, placards, and visual materials for the Newport Jazz Festival and Newport Folk Festival for more than 30 years. Her lettering style has become so identified with the Newport aesthetic that it is, for many longtime festivalgoers, as much a part of the experience as the music itself. The placards she creates are not simply functional signage. They are works of calligraphic art that happen to serve a practical purpose, made with the same attention and craft that the musicians on stage are bringing to their performances. Owning one of Nan Parati’s placards from the Newport Jazz Festival is owning a piece of that visual tradition, signed by the artist who performed beneath it. There is nothing else quite like it in the jazz world.

The Newport Jazz Festival and The Improv Café share the same fundamental conviction about what this music is and how it should be experienced: live, in a room, with no approximations and no substitutes. The recordings we broadcast on this station include performances captured at Newport across seven decades. Miles Davis’s Newport comeback. Duke Ellington’s legendary 1956 night. John Coltrane on that stage in the years when he was at the peak of what he was discovering. These are not just recordings. They are documents of the kind of live music events that the Newport Festivals Foundation is committed to sustaining into the future through its education and artist relief work.

Bidding in this auction is a direct investment in that future. It closes Tuesday, October 27, at 11:59 AM Eastern. Do not wait until Monday night.

Dee Dee Bridgewater is one of the most decorated and versatile artists in the history of jazz and American music. Her career spans more than five decades, crossing freely between jazz, Broadway, theater, and the blues tradition with a voice and a stage presence that are among the most immediately commanding in any genre she inhabits. Born in Memphis, Tennessee, and raised in Flint, Michigan, she grew up surrounded by jazz, the daughter of a musician father, and came to New York in the early 1970s where she quickly established herself as one of the most gifted vocalists of her generation. She performed with the Thad Jones and Mel Lewis Jazz Orchestra, toured with Dizzy Gillespie, and originated the role of Glinda the Good Witch in the original Broadway production of “The Wiz” in 1974, winning the Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Musical. That combination of jazz credibility and Broadway achievement defined her early career, and everything that came after expanded it.

The Grammy Awards came later and told the rest of the story: Best Jazz Vocal Album for “Dear Ella” in 1997, a tribute to Ella Fitzgerald that critics called the finest vocal jazz tribute recording in years; for “This Is New” in 2002; and for “Eleanora Fagan (1915–1959): To Billie with Love from Dee Dee” in 2010, an equally definitive tribute to Billie Holiday. Three Grammy wins for three tribute albums, each one demonstrating a different dimension of what she can do with a song and a story. In between those recordings she also served as the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization Goodwill Ambassador, spending years in West Africa and bringing back the musical influences that gave her later recordings their distinctive character. She is not simply a jazz singer. She is one of the great theatrical and musical figures of her era.

On this Australian tour, Bridgewater is performing alongside the We Exist! quintet, a multi-generational, all-female ensemble whose name announces its purpose directly. The We Exist! project is Bridgewater’s most explicitly statement-making touring vehicle, an ensemble built to showcase the depth of female musicianship in jazz at a moment when the conversation about representation in the music has reached a level of seriousness that the industry can no longer ignore. Performing with a quintet of women across a range of generations, from seasoned veterans to emerging voices, Bridgewater is making an argument through performance rather than through words: that the tradition of jazz has always included women, that it has always been shaped by women, and that the current generation of female jazz musicians is among the most accomplished in the music’s history. The We Exist! project puts that argument in front of audiences in every city it reaches.

Dee Dee Bridgewater’s Australian tour is exactly the kind of live jazz event that The Improv Café has always been built to celebrate and to broadcast. A vocalist of her stature, performing with an ensemble that makes a specific and meaningful statement about the tradition she inhabits, in festival settings that treat jazz as a serious art form and a living cultural event rather than a historical curiosity, is everything that live jazz can be when it is taken seriously at every level. The Melbourne cancellation is a genuine loss for that city’s audiences. The Perth performance on October 27 is the remaining opportunity to see one of the great voices in jazz history on this particular tour, in this particular configuration, before it concludes.

If you are in Western Australia, the Octagon Theatre in Perth on October 27 is the destination. Tickets through the Perth International Jazz Festival.

The inaugural Durham Jazz Festival has been designed from the ground up to use Durham’s extraordinary architectural character as part of the experience. The city is compact enough to walk between venues, old enough that several of its performance spaces carry genuine historical weight, and intimate enough that the festival has a community feel despite its national-caliber lineup. The Redhills Durham Miners’ Hall, a Grade II listed building that has been the site of labor movement history for over a century, anchors the major performances. The Gala Theatre provides a more conventional concert hall setting for the big band and orchestral programming. Assembly Rooms Theatre, St Chad’s College, Fabio’s Bar, and the Claypath Delicatessen fill in the intimate and club-style end of the program. And Gallery 25 is running a parallel photography exhibition throughout the weekend, “The Space Between The Notes” by award-winning live music photographer John Lyons, which closes on Sunday alongside the festival itself.

The lineup blends national prestige with genuine range. Ronnie Scott’s All Stars opening Friday night at Redhills represents the top of the UK jazz establishment. Pete Roth Trio featuring Bill Bruford, the legendary drummer’s first live appearance in over a decade, represents the experimental edge of the program. Between those two poles, the Durham Jazz Festival has assembled big band swing, gypsy jazz, reimagined pop, avant-garde guitar, and late-night jamming in a three-day program that reflects what jazz actually is in 2026 rather than what a certain kind of festival organizer thinks it should be.

The Durham Jazz Festival has been specifically designed to use the city’s architectural variety as part of the program, placing the music in rooms that range from grand restored halls to intimate basement bars:

Gallery 25 runs the parallel photography exhibition “The Space Between The Notes” by John Lyons throughout the festival weekend, adding a visual arts dimension to the music programming and closing on Sunday alongside the festival itself.

A first-year festival that opens with Ronnie Scott’s All Stars in a historic miners’ hall, features Bill Bruford in his first live performance in over a decade, programs gypsy jazz alongside avant-garde guitar and a late-night jam session, and runs a photography exhibition alongside the music is not a cautious debut. It is a statement. The Durham Jazz Festival has arrived in the UK jazz calendar as if it has always been there, and the city that gave it a home this weekend is giving jazz audiences across the North East of England something they have not had before: their own festival, built for their city, programmed with the kind of ambition that suggests this is only the first edition of something that will matter for a long time.

The Improv Café only broadcasts live jazz, live big band, and live swing. Durham Jazz Festival this weekend is all of those things in one historic city over three nights. Tickets at durhamjazzfestival.co.uk.

The 38th Annual Earshot Jazz Festival is doing what it has always done: filling more than a dozen Seattle venues with music that spans the full spectrum of jazz, from classic straight-ahead performances by international masters to new commissions from the most adventurous voices in the Pacific Northwest scene. Earshot has built its reputation over four decades specifically by refusing to treat these two things as separate. The internationally recognized artist performing at Town Hall Seattle and the Seattle-based avant-garde ensemble debuting new work at the Langston Hughes Performing Arts Institute are both on the same festival program, given equal billing and equal institutional support, because Earshot has always understood that the live jazz ecosystem is only healthy when the local scene and the global one are in genuine dialogue rather than competition.

This year, that dialogue has a centennial dimension that gives the entire festival an additional layer of historical weight. John Coltrane and Miles Davis, born within months of each other in 1926, have anchored 2026’s global jazz calendar in ways that no other anniversary has. At Earshot, their music has threaded through the programming all month long, with tributes that range from note-faithful live performances of “Kind of Blue” and “A Love Supreme” to original compositions inspired by their legacies performed by Seattle musicians for whom this music is not history but foundation. The festival’s final days are where that programming reaches its culmination, and the venues hosting it this week are some of the most distinctive rooms in the Pacific Northwest live music landscape.

With the festival closing on Sunday, October 25, here are the venues most directly connected to the centennial tributes and the Pacific Northwest spotlight programming running through the end of the week:

Earshot Jazz Festival is exactly the kind of event that The Improv Café exists to celebrate: a festival that takes live jazz seriously enough to spread it across an entire city for more than three weeks, that treats the local scene with the same institutional respect it gives to international headliners, and that uses the centennial of two of the most important musicians in jazz history as an opportunity for genuine musical engagement rather than simple tribute. The performances running at Town Hall, the Royal Room, the Langston Hughes Performing Arts Institute, and the Black and Tan Hall this week are not recreations or revivals. They are live musicians, in 2026, bringing their own lives and their own understanding of this music into contact with material that Miles Davis and John Coltrane created and left for exactly this purpose: to be played, transformed, and passed forward.

The festival closes Sunday, October 25. If you are in Seattle, the remaining days of the 38th annual Earshot Jazz Festival are not to be missed. Complete schedule and tickets at earshot.org/festival.

Winter’s Jazz Club occupies a specific and important place in Chicago’s live music landscape: it is, without qualification, a listening room. That distinction matters more than it might seem. Most venues where jazz is performed are primarily bars or restaurants that happen to feature live music, where the ambient noise of conversation and service competes with the musicians on a given night. Winter’s operates from a fundamentally different premise. When the set begins, the room goes quiet. The focus shifts entirely to the performers and to the acoustics that the space was designed to support. The hundred or so guests in the main room are there to listen, and the musicians are there to be heard, and the specific conditions that produce the best jazz performance, the same conditions that made the Village Vanguard’s low ceiling and the Blue Note’s intimate layout legendary, are present at Winter’s in a form that Chicago audiences have come to rely on.

The club is located at 465 N. McClurg Court in the Streeterville neighborhood, a short walk from Navy Pier and from the heart of Chicago’s Near North Side. The address puts it in one of Chicago’s most accessible downtown neighborhoods while the room itself creates the sense of complete separation from the city outside that the best jazz clubs have always managed. A separate bar area at the front of the venue provides a livelier atmosphere for guests who want a drink before or after the set, but the main listening room maintains the dedicated quiet policy throughout the performance. It is a design that respects the audience, the musicians, and the music equally.

The listening room is one of the oldest and most important formats in jazz, and it is one of the rarest. The clubs that have built their reputations specifically around the quiet-during-sets, acoustics-first, audience-as-participant model — the Village Vanguard in New York, the Jazz Showcase also in Chicago, Scullers in Boston — are the rooms where the music gets to be fully itself, where a pianist’s left hand is as audible as their right, where a drummer’s brush work on the snare carries across the room without amplification, where the silence between notes is as meaningful as the notes themselves. Winter’s belongs in that company. It has built a reputation among Chicago jazz audiences and among the musicians who prefer to play in rooms where the listening is serious, and that reputation is earned.

For listeners of The Improv Café, the Winter’s Jazz Club represents in physical form exactly what this station represents in broadcast form: a dedicated space where jazz is the point, not the background. Every track we play on this station was recorded live, in a real room, by real musicians performing for a real audience. Winter’s is what that looks like when you are in the room rather than listening to the recording of it. If you find yourself in Chicago on any Wednesday through Sunday evening, 465 N. McClurg Court is the address you want. Book ahead. Arrive early for a front-row table. And when the set begins, listen.
